The Alliance for the Arts, Día de los Muertos: A Juried Exhibit, October 1 – 30, 2019. It was an honor to be selected to exhibit my painting, “Espíritu” at this exhibit and have my work featured in the press. It is the first painting I had ever entered into an exhibition and it sold to a private collection. One of my childhood companions was my cat (among many), and this is a special painting expressing deep ties to kindred spirits, caring for others, and caring for life.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a spectacular celebration of life and encourages us to connect with loved ones while reflecting on the ties that bind the past to the present, it is a time to remember and celebrate the lives of friends and family.
Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, the first day primarily recognizing children who have passed, and the second honoring the adults. Each day is a celebration filled with food, music, dancing, and coming together to honor the deceased whose spirits come to visit their families. Families decorate altars, or ofrendas, with candles, photographs, toys, food, and bright colors to honor their loved ones and lead their visiting spirits home.
